Preserving Pahari Identity Outside the Valley

According to Kanchakaji Pahari, former chairperson of NPDA, the Pahari language, culture, customs, and skills are now preserved mainly in Godawari municipality of Lalitpur. Outside the valley, most communities have already lost touch with their heritage.

Settlements across Sindhuli, Ramechhap, and Gorkha districts show a pattern:

• Language shift to Nepali is nearly complete in second-generation urban migrants.
• Traditional bamboo weaving is practiced only in Badikhel — not in diaspora communities.
• Without intervention, the unique Tibeto-Burman Pahari language could be lost within a generation.

Community leaders are calling for government policy to promote indigenous skills and language preservation, noting that cultural programmes alone cannot reverse decades of assimilation pressure.
