Sociolinguistic Study: Pahari Is Not a Dialect of Newar

A comprehensive sociolinguistic study by SIL Global has documented where Pahari is spoken, the ethnolinguistic variation within the community, and current patterns of language use — concluding that Pahari should no longer be classified as a dialect of Newar.

The study assessed mutual intelligibility, community perception, and linguistic structure:

• Pahari-speaking communities span the middle hills, with the densest population in Lalitpur district.
• Lalitpur Pahari and Sindhupalchok Pahari are mutually unintelligible — indicating deep internal diversity.
• Pahari people perceive their language as separate from Newar, and no Newar speaker understands Pahari.

Use of Pahari is diminishing in all domains and it is no longer being passed to the youngest generation. The study calls for urgent documentation and community-based language revitalisation programmes.
